Pequin Submission Guidelines, Etc.

Pequin is a writerly website keen about posting tightly typed texts and like photography by a variety of authors and artists from all over the world.

Pequin is interested in text submissions 1,000 words or fewer and photographs or graphics 700 pixels wide (however high) to introduce the texts.

If sending text, please send only one submission at a time. Attached Word Documents are best.

Pequin prefers prose to poetry, fiction and non-fiction, narratives, supershort stories, dream logs, love letters, plays, excerpts, recollections, and the like.

Once again, Pequin is a place for prose. There’s a time and place for poetry, and we’re totally down with versification, but our format almost always involves text that wraps. If you really want to submit a poem, maybe disguise it as a “prose poem” first, like this and this.

The photos we like tend to focus on carefully composed things of nature, unlikely and unusual people/places/things, rooms, reflections, and otherwise suggestive, off-center, often indistinct subject matter. Our most frequent contributor of these kinds of photos is Karl Lintvedt.

We try to reply to submissions very quickly, often immediately, although this may not always be the case. If more than 2 weeks have passed and you still haven’t heard anything, feel free to send us another note (sometimes our spam catcher thinks you’re trying to sell us viagra).

Text submissions fewer than 1,000 words are acceptable, closer to 1,000 are better, and exactly 1,000 are best. Submissions exceeding 1,000 words will not be read.

If accepted, be prepared to wait at least a month for your piece to run. The current wait (as of April 4, 2008) is about two months.

Maybe your text will be an indirect response to a photo and maybe it won’t.

Pequin loves your making a simple thing complex, like this. To paraphrase Chekhov, don’t tell us the moon is shining; show us the glint of light on broken glass.

Feel free to suggest a photo but usually we let our cat pick.
